Wilmington braces for loss of DHL, 10,000 jobs

The Columbus Dispatch reports:

“While today’s announcement is disappointing, it’s not entirely unexpected,” said David L. Raizk, the mayor of Wilmington. “Given the fact that their volume has continued to go down and we’ve seen this worldwide financial collapse, it’s not completely surprising it would result in this.”

Raizk said DHL’s exit from the domestic market probably kills the argument of local and state leaders, who had pleaded with federal officials to block the planned agreement with UPS on antitrust grounds. That argument already had been shot down in August by the U.S. Department of Transportation, which refused to stop the deal.

Still, Gov. Ted Strickland expressed dismay at yesterday’s news, calling it “terribly unfortunate, terribly sad.”
